Orangutans & City Tours in Penang

Take a walk through an island sanctuary with orangutans, and embark on a city tour that includes some of Penang’s top sites.

About Your Trip

Journey to Penang Island and discover some of Malaysia’s oldest and most culturally significant landmarks. Your first full tour day takes you to an island sanctuary for critically endangered Bornean orangutans. See these beloved red-orange haired apes roaming freely in their natural habitat at Bukit Merah Orang Utan Island Foundation. Dedicated to the well-being of these “People of the Forest,” it provides conservation education to its visitors. After lunch featuring Ipoh bean sprouts, transfer to Ipoh Old Town, a vibrant place full known of narrow, crowded alleyways, intriguing wall murals and an architecturally impressive railway station.

Continue your exploration of Penang’s rich history, this time with a city tour of George Town. Attractions include historic Fort Cornwallis for photos, as well as City Hall and the clock tower commemorating Queen Victoria’s jubilee. You’ll travel down Armenian Street and take in the unique art collection of painted murals and wirework on the sides of buildings and houses. Transfer to the Clan Jetties and walk through the Chew jetty. Then, you can kick back and experience a trishaw ride. At the Pinang Peranakan Mansion, marvel at the antiques and collectibles owned by a rich Baba more than a hundred years ago. Located on one of the oldest streets in the city, Wonderfood Museum displays realistic replicas of Penang’s well-known culinary delights. End your outing with a treat: a traditional durian egg tart with Hainanese coffee!

What we love:
• Early 20th-century Chinese settlements on Weld Quay, known as the Clan Jetties, formed a water society that exists to this day — 7 clans still reside in these houses on stilts.
• Thanks to well-preserved buildings, the capital city of George Town is designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
• Trishaws, a popular mode of transportation, are often lavishly decorated to draw the attention of tourists.
• Themed heritage walking tours available throughout George Town enable visitors to explore the city’s culture and history at their own pace — try the Food Trail or Heritage Building Trail.

Destination

Penang, known as “The Pearl of the Orient,” is located on the northwest coast of Malaysia and is spread between a mainland and Penang Island. It boasts world-heritage architecture, sandy beaches, lush rainforests, colonial-era churches and ancient temples. Add to this an abundance of dining options, and Penang is among the most popular travel destinations in Malaysia.

The region’s cuisine is unique and varied, thanks to a mix of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Peranakan cultures. Food is available on nearly every street corner — not just confined to restaurants and cafes — and is cooked in small batches ready to eat on the spot. Try assam laksa, a spicy noodle soup that combines Chinese and Malay cuisine, or sambal udang, a well-known Peranakan dish of prawns in chili.
